Do you have ten minutes to spare?

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.

I'm reading a book by Brendon Burchard at the moment called 'High Performance Habits' and I had to write down this quote that I feel most our students can relate to.

Last week, I struggled with fitting in 30mins of practise, so I started to commit to 10 minutes a day comprising of 4 scales.

It's not enough to really focus on technical work but I found 3 times out of the 4 sessions, I ended up continuing and actually doing 25 minutes.

So I've given you a quick plan on what to sing in your daily practise routine:

  • Diaphragm breathing (softly hiss twice, then do two lots of counting (try and reach a minimum of 30 numbers)  for 2 minutes;

  • Start with Soft Descending Scales - 2 minutes;

  • Descending with an ascending passage (8ths descending plus a 5ths) - 2 minutes;

  • Ascending Step Scale (123, 234, 345, 43, 432, 321) - 2 minutes;

  • Intervals with ascending (1358, 7654321). Alternate with soft and increasing volume through the scale without pushing your breath - 2 minutes.

That's it! You will find, after getting into a habit, that you will end up extending your practise time and before you know, you will feel more confident in your vocals and your songs are easier to sing.

I’ve created a beginners, intermediate and advanced 10 minute warm up here.
